All right! The Formation System first pass (high level) is ready for viewing. It’s taken us a bit longer to get things prepared for posting, but after you take a look, we think you’ll understand why.
Thanks!

wow, great job. I’ve never see such an complex marching system. Congratulation!
This is starting to realy look like everything I was hoping for when I first stumbled across this website. I was wondering a few things however (wich might be a bit of a premature question this early). Will the drill function be one that needs doing during combat (Not knowing how fast paced battle will be. It seems like it will be a bit to much micromanagment on troops during a fight)? And will the march column feature have an autoroad follow function (Presuming marching on road will be faster than off road)?
Hello, Brilliant. Just the level of micromanagement i wanted to see in Age of Empires 3. This feature of unit formations was removed from AOE3 i my dismay. At least there was tactics in formations in battle, do all these formations make it easy to code?
Also, I know this is later one but will a unit have emotion like in Battle for Middle Earth 1 and if they suffer a flank attack, they brake?
The work is looking awesome and I’m really looking forward to reading the next update.
Thank you
Thank you guys. We appreciate the positive thoughts on it.
Let me jump to the questions.
Will the drill function be one that needs doing during combat?
Not during combat, however taking a new recruit and getting them ‘leveled up’ through drills will help.
It seems like it will be a bit to much micromanagment on troops during a fight?
- Yes and no. This will be where much of our time and testing/balancing will come in to play. Our goal is to provide the user with enough control that you ‘have control’, while not over burdening them. Varying levels of management will be available.
And will the march column feature have an autoroad follow function (Presuming marching on road will be faster than off road)?
- Yes, there is an autoroad feature. And different routes provide speed differences.
Do all these formations make it easy to code?
- Depends on who you ask.
Will a unit have emotion?
- There are multiple values associated with each unit type. Emotion is a mix of several different elements providing both a positive and negative bonus depending on the situation.
Also, the next update will be coming later tomorrow evening.
Thank you!
Hey guys…new update coming soon? I have been following the slow journey you guys have been through for about 10 years now it feels like…I know i have sent several emails over the years. Hope things are going well and love seeing all the updates and the progress that you are all making. Can’t wait until things get to a playable stage.
Hello, can’t wait to play this game, it’s been awhile since there was a good civil war game, any news on when the next update will be?
Hi Jimmy,
Yes, that is definitely the question at hand. We got a bit behind (additional work came up), but we’ll be getting back on track next month. Thank you for checking in with us.
Ok, thanks for the quick response and keep up the good work, it’s going to be a fantastic game, can’t wait.
Hello, When will the next update be? How is the game coming along? Thank you
Great question Graham. We were doing really well on updates, then got flooded with additional work (the reason for the lack of updates). I have scheduled on my list (starting next week) for continued development, so starting June, we should have a nice set of updates going. Let me know if you have further questions. Thank you!
I hope you guys get this game on the market, because frankly there is no real RTS game that I like, I’m currently playing Shogun Total War 2 its ok but that steam thing jacks things up! I loved the idea of your game some 10 years ago…the screen shots were awsome…they were ahead of there time…Sega has not yet announced there next Total War Game…most of us RTS gamers want a Civil War Game…but we will have to see…Sid Meiers Gettysburg is a classic…and played smoothly…the graphics were OK but that strategy was excellent…I hope your game is both, Is there any idea of when we might see something…also is there a possibility of Europe invading from the North or Mexico with France or Spain invading from the South causing the States to unite against a common foe…that would be a great “What if” Thanks for listening
Hi Everett,
Thank you. That is certainly our larger goal for WBTS. Also, France, Spain, Europe have been options for awhile now. Nothing concrete on them yet though.
On one day in 2002 i was searching for any american civil war games coming out because i am a civil war buff I have participated in many Re-enactments i have visited many civil war battle fields i love the civil war it was a moment in our history that defined our great nation and i stumbled on this game after looking at the screen shot post on the older website reading some of the stuff on that same website i was so excited to have found out a civil war game of that caliber to be coming out i got a little discouraged because there was period of time where i thought everything fell threw because there was no activity on the site and then this new site and every thing I’ve seen so far rejuvenated my excitement and i cant wait for this game and when i finally play this game its going to be tits. I’am stoked about everything so far guys this will go triple platinum when it comes out. What i would Really like to see is more screen shot please or if you have them game play videos
I know you guys are busy right now, just wondering if there will be any updates soon?
I too am looking forward to the next update. Though I haven’t posted many questions or comments I have eagerly awaited this game’s relaease. The formation system seems extremely well thought out. I can’t wait to see what else is in store.
I’ve been looking forward to the release of this game for a loooooong time–at least for ten years and maybe more. I can appreciate your wanting to get it right, but I believe it reaches the point of being ridiculous. Michelangelo spent four years painting the Sistene Chapel ceiling, and it was a masterpiece. I can only image what WBTS is going to be like. I keep checking back every, oh I don’t know, six months or so and always find the same stuff: we’ve fallen a little behind schedule, but here’s a new update! We’ve just developed this new system blah, blah, blah. I give up.
I appreciate you sticking around for such an extended amount of time. And yep, the progress is pretty much on an up and down curve.
We are currently completing 5 games for the pc, mobile and tablets due at the end of October (2011) for publishers, so that has completely taken our time away from the non-paying games like WBTS.
As always, when we have time, we’ll keep plugging away at the game and work towards completion. Thank you.
Hello,
You write:
“We are currently completing 5 games for the pc, mobile and tablets due at the end of October (2011) for publishers, so that has completely taken our time away from the non-paying games like WBTS.”
I guess I don’t understand. WBTS is a non-paying game because it hasn’t been completed. I would be happy to pay $40 – $60 for this game WHEN IT’S COMPLETED!!!! At this rate, it will never be completed! The game would certainly sell because there’s an interested market out here in Consumer Land. 2011 is the 150th anniversary for the beginning of the American Civil War and the media is generating stories, editorials, etc. every day about the War Between the States. The History Channel just had Civil War Week a little while ago. The USPS is issuing new stamps featuring aspects of the Civil War. I’m certain more and more people are being exposed to the ACW on a daily basis because of the anniversary. I do wish you would shake the bushes and get a publisher to financially support you and get this project completed. Some things are worth more than profit, and exposing a new generation to this aspect of our country’s history is priceless. Your game looks well worth the effort. Please, please strike while the iron is hot.
I completely agree with James here, this has got to be the longest developed vaporware of all time. You guys are starting to rival Duke Nukem. And your “updates” are getting comical, you are posting stuff over the course of weeks that should take a day for someone to put out that’s working on an indie team or a mod much less an actual studio. I can’t believe I am still coming back here. I remember when you guys used to post screenshot’s of your “game” I still played SM Gettysburg then. I think I lost hope between the first and second Take Command games came out. And dang, since then there is now Scourge of War: Gettysburg. All three of those games by the same guy and his slowly growing team.
Honestly, this feels like a fake project. Yet, it has been going on so long I figured you guys would have given up on the joke by now. And here it is, still kicking.
Why don’t you take an approach like Notch, with Minecraft(selling a game before final release, giving free alpha/beta updates at a reasonable pace)? It would lend some credence to your cause by giving us something tangible. And on top of that getting a little money out of some interested customers might just spur you people to actually commit some time to this and make a game or hire people to do it for you rather then just showing off a little tech demo every few months.
Hi Chris, James.
Thank you for your comments and suggestions.
I’m happy to say that yes, I agree with your statements, as well. Especially with the direction and motivation towards completing the project that you are talking about. Securing a publisher/financing and/or before release purchases are excellent ways to push the project forward. The 150th anniversary for the Civil War is such a great opportunity and time to release the project and really help motivate and teach that next generation about the history of the war and the people.
With that said, let me provide you with a deciding timeframe.
Let’s mark October 19 on the calendar. Our schedules here will be cleared, and it will allow us time to evaluate and provide you with a direct answer on the game and its future. We’ll make a post then and lay everything out.
Again, thank you for your passion and motivation. I think I need to have you two on the team to keep things moving.
Hi all fans of this project. Me too, even from far Spain. I’ve been following the game developement for years ( I came from old SM gettysburg fans web). Meanwhile, I purchased almost all serious RWS and turns based games in market, specially ACW related, and probably, I expect, your game will be better. I would like to encourage you for the final push and market release asap. Do not loose the momentum
